What better way to start a post than to share a picture of a Spitfire from Saturday at the Temora Aviation Museum with you.

I am happy to say on Wednesday of my second week I am going a little better since I am now able to ride over 10 km at a time.  I have also started having breakfast which is something I haven’t done for a long time.

I know I have to improve my diet, how I will improve it though is still up for consideration so I’m not planning on any further changes till next week.

Below are the stats from todays ride, which is a lot better than how I did on my first week. Hopefully I’ll be able to do 15 km rides next week,  for that of course we shall have to wait and see.

The Statistics

Weather

Conditions: Dry

Temperature: 20.4 °C

Humidity: 38%

Wind Speed: 9 kts

Wind Gusts: 15 kts

Ride

Maximum Speed 31.9 km/h

P.S. No crashes since that first day, no doubt in the future I’ll be sure to fit some more in of course.

Reflection

The first week

Looking back on my first week I can say I hoped to have done more. Yet for one who has pursued a sedentary lifestyle in combination with poor eating habits for a long time now, I can happily say at least I have made a start and am still going.

I didn’t ride as much as I hoped to, although to be fair on Friday and Saturday I was not able to ride. Friday I was exploring various small towns with my wife from the comfort of the car while on Saturday I attended an airshow.

On the first ride I rode a little more than 8 km in around 31 minutes and found myself somewhat puffed from the experience. The following day I could have found any number of excuses not to ride and would have been quite happy not getting off my backside. The trouble is thinking like that isn’t going to get me very far, if I am going to change a decades worth of poor habits.

So I got on the bike and gave it another go, although this time I didn’t go as far and ended up settling on 5km rides being at the limit of my capability during the first week.  I averaged a little over 5 km in distance while taking around 18 minutes per ride in the first week. To put this into perspective, when I was younger I would run 5km in 19 minutes so my first week has been very slow going.

Despite my slow pace I am surprised to have lost a small amount of weight and an equally small amount of waistline. So in the end I kept going and am still going.

As the links on the side of the page show from some of the people that inspire me, if you put the effort in even if it is not easy you will be rewarded over time for that effort.

Well one thing for sure I am out of condition and look ridiculous in Lycra and really can’t go far without feeling like I am about to drop dead from a torn heart muscle!

It really wasn’t that bad, it is true I do look a little silly and I am certainly out of condition and was puffed at the end of my first training ride. I am not up to a greater distance than 8km yet so will do a few more of those over the coming days and ever so slowly build on that when I am ready to do more.

Of course the comic relief is what we’re all waiting for and being so eminently qualified to deliver that relief, I will share with you what I did to finish my ride.

Despite having practiced getting in and out of my Clipless pedals a considerable number of times and with no problems whatsoever while doing a 5km ride with my 11 year-old son. I took the opportunity at the end of this inaugural training ride to neglect to twist my shoe out of my pedal, as I came to a complete stop in my driveway. My spectacular display of comic riding skills disappointingly occurred in the complete absence of an audience able to enjoy my impromptu display of humour.

My daredevil finish resulted in some scratches being liberally distributed across the outside one of my pedals. While some gravel rash and blood was painted upon my right knee for good measure.

Note to self; Try to remember following a ride that your feet are locked to the pedals until you twist them out (this is best done before one reaches a complete stop). Also strongly consider shaving your legs, you know it’s a pain but it really does make dealing with losing bark a lot easier.

In closing despite my stationary crash I have to say I quite enjoyed the ride and look forward to doing mostly the same later today.

Introduction

Me in the bike gear

Fat in Lycra! 'please don’t try this at home'

Hello and welcome to my journey this Wednesday afternoon. My name is Daniel and having just recently turned 40 and coincidentally moving from Australia’s largest city to an outback town that has the ‘crooked mile’. I realised upon surveying my new surrounds that I could no longer readily enjoy a day at the art gallery or an evening at the theatre or enjoy some of the finest foods with good company.

So what should one do in a place with some fine people surrounded by farmland that stretches to the horizon in every direction?

With long scenic roads, plenty of tumbleweed and nary a traffic light in sight for hundreds of kilometres cycling seems to be an ideal pursuit for me to enjoy the scenery and work on my embarrassingly large belly.

This blog that I have called Rotund Bike is another part of my attempt to lose weight and find something to do here out west.

Being a fat bastard who sometimes kids himself that he is skinny like he was a decade ago by buying clothes that he will never fit, in the hope that one day… well you probably know the rest on that score.

That said this blog is a way for me to hold myself to account on this bicycle riding pursuit through good and bad as I try to shed some clothe sizes along the way. Plus as you shall see wearing Lycra at my weight looks even more ridiculous than normal and needs to be fixed by shedding the kilos.

So please feel free to comment and participate on my journey here on Rotund Bike, also don’t forget to take the time to get yourself out there on the road as well. Since surely doing some exercise is better for all of us than doing none at all.
